Estimate first. A ballpark answer catches a misplaced decimal point before it costs you a $2,000 apple. The standard algorithm for multiplication is the area model written in a column — every row is a piece of the rectangle. Division is fair sharing in chunks: take out big groups first, then smaller ones, and add up what you took. Decimals follow the same place-value rules as whole numbers — line up places to add or subtract, and use your estimate to place the point when you multiply or divide.
