An exponent countsย copies being multipliedย โ€” 2ยณ = 2ร—2ร—2 = 8, never 2ร—3. A letterย stands for a number, and an expression is a recipe for computing with it: exponents first, then ร— and รท, then + and โˆ’. Two expressions areย equivalentย only if they match forย EVERYย value of the variable โ€” one lucky match proves nothing.
