Activate Your Gradebook: Show the Category for Your First Unit

Sleedu for Middle & High School Teachers โ€” Start Here

To activate your gradebook in Sleedu, you don’t build anything โ€” your categories are already made. Each teaching unit has its own grade category (01-Topic 1, 02-Topic 2, and so on), but they start hidden. You simply Show the one for the unit you’re teaching now. Then any assignment or quiz you place in it counts toward the grade. As you move to the next unit, you repeat the same step.

Why the categories start hidden

A hidden category (marked with a crossed-out eye icon) doesn’t clutter the gradebook or confuse students with empty units. You reveal each one only when you reach it. This keeps the gradebook clean and matches your teaching pace.

Step 1 โ€” Open Gradebook setup

  1. Open your course and click the Grades tab. [SCREENSHOT: course tabs, Grades]
  2. Click the dropdown at the top left that says Grader report.
  3. Under the Setup heading, choose Gradebook setup. [SCREENSHOT: dropdown, Gradebook setup]

You’ll see the full list of categories: 00-New Activities Not Graded, 01-Topic 1 through 14-Topic 14, and the others. The crossed-out eye next to each means it’s currently hidden.

Step 2 โ€” Show the category for your first unit

  1. Find 01-Topic 1 (or whichever unit you’re starting).
  2. On the right, under Actions, click the โ‹ฏ (three dots) for that category.
  3. Choose Show. [SCREENSHOT: Actions menu with Show highlighted]

The eye icon changes from crossed-out to open โ€” the category is now active and visible.

  1. Scroll down and click Save changes.

That’s your gradebook activated for the unit. Nothing else to configure.

Step 3 โ€” Put new work into the active category

Now, when you create an assignment or quiz for this unit, place it in 01-Topic 1 so it counts:

  • When adding the activity, or afterward in Gradebook setup, set its parent category to 01-Topic 1.
  • The grade flows into that category’s total automatically, and the category total rolls up into the course total.

(Tip: while you’re still building and don’t want something to count yet, leave it in 00-New Activities Not Graded โ€” the holding pen โ€” then move it into the topic when you’re ready.)

Repeat for each new unit

When you finish Topic 1 and move to Topic 2, do the exact same thing:

  1. Grades โ†’ Gradebook setup
  2. โ‹ฏ next to 02-Topic 2 โ†’ Show
  3. Save changes
  4. Place that unit’s assignments and quizzes into 02-Topic 2

Same three clicks, every unit, all semester.

Your gradebook is live. Next: creating your first assignment.
