Create Your First Assignment in Sleedu

Sleedu for Middle & High School Teachers — Start Here

To create an assignment in Sleedu, you turn on Edit mode, add it to a section of your course, set the dates, choose how students submit, and — the important part — assign it to the grade category for the unit you’re teaching. That last step is what makes the grade land in the right place in your gradebook.

Step 1 — Turn on Edit mode

In the top-right corner of your course, switch Edit mode on. [SCREENSHOT: Edit mode toggle] Nothing can be added until this is on. You’ll now see + buttons, pencil icons, and “Add section” options appear.

Step 2 — Add a section for your unit (if you need one)

If you want a spot on the course page for this unit’s work:

  1. Click Add section at the bottom of the course. [SCREENSHOT: Add section button]
  2. Click the pencil to name it (for example, 1 – Introduction to Chemistry), then press Enter. [SCREENSHOT: naming the section]

Step 3 — Add the activity

  1. Inside your section, click the + button. [SCREENSHOT: + inside section]
  2. Choose Activity or resource.
  3. In the picker, choose Assignment. [SCREENSHOT: activity picker with Assignment]

Step 4 — Name it and add instructions

  1. Type an Assignment name (for example, About Me). [SCREENSHOT: New Assignment general]
  2. Add instructions in the Description box.
  3. Optionally tick Display description on course page so students see the instructions without clicking in.

Step 5 — Set the dates (Availability)

Open the Availability section: [SCREENSHOT: Availability dates]

  • Allow submissions from — when students can start turning it in.
  • Due date — when it’s due.
  • Cut-off date — a hard stop after which no submissions are accepted (leave off if you accept late work).
  • Remind me to grade by — puts a reminder on your dashboard.

Step 6 — Choose how students submit

Open Submission types: [SCREENSHOT: Submission types]

  • Online text — students type directly in Sleedu.
  • File submissions — students upload a file (essay, photo of work, PDF).

Tick whichever you want (you can use both). Set a Word limit only if you need one.

Step 7 — Link it to your unit’s grade category (important)

This is the step that connects the assignment to the gradebook you activated.

  1. Open the Grade section.
  2. Find Grade category. [SCREENSHOT: Grade category dropdown]
  3. Choose the category for your unit — for example, 01-Topic 1.
  4. Set the Grade maximum (e.g. 100 points) if you want it scored.

If you’re not ready for it to count yet, choose 00-New Activities Not Graded (the holding pen) and move it to the topic later.

Step 8 — Save

Scroll to the bottom and click: [SCREENSHOT: Save buttons]

  • Save and return to course — go back to the course page, or
  • Save and display — open the assignment to check it.

That’s your assignment created, dated, and correctly attached to your unit’s grade category.

Doing it again

Every future assignment is the same seven steps. The only thing that changes each unit is Step 7 — point the Grade category at the current topic (02-Topic 2, then 03-Topic 3, and so on) as you activate each one.

Assignment done. Next: building a question bank and your first quiz.
