Why do the majority of school’s SMART Goals fail to improve math scores?

Schools frequently turn to third parties for “reactive” support, rather than arming teachers with the tools and strategies for proactive solutions. Many consultants and PD trainings focus more on time-filling activities rather than practical and ready-to-use solutions and tools. As current teachers, we provide proven solutions and tools with measurable outcomes.

Sleedu MTSS

How will MTSS TIER 1 help improve math scores?

  1. Single platform for all activities, notes, resources, feedback, grades, and support for all students: By consolidating all educational materials and resources into a single platform, students can access everything they need in one place. This streamlines the learning process, reduces distractions, and ensures that students have a consistent and organized learning environment, leading to better comprehension and retention of math concepts.
  2. Instant feedback with multiple attempts and tries: Immediate feedback allows students to understand their mistakes in real-time and encourages them to try problems again. With each attempt, they refine their understanding and improve problem-solving skills, resulting in higher math proficiency.
  3. Real-time updated grades and comprehensive Gradebook: A continuously updated grade book provides both teachers and students with a clear, up-to-date understanding of the student’s progress. Teachers can quickly identify and address areas where a student might be struggling, while students can gauge where they need to focus their efforts.
  4. Instant feedback builds self-efficacy and mastery: Immediate feedback not only helps students correct their mistakes but also bolsters their confidence. As they see their progress and understand where they went wrong, they develop a belief in their ability to master math concepts, leading to increased motivation and better results.
  5. 24/7 opportunities to make up late work & re-take practices (auto-graded): By offering flexible opportunities for students to revisit and redo assignments, they can continue practicing at their own pace and on their own schedule. Continuous practice, especially with auto-graded tasks, ensures that students receive plenty of repetitions to cement their understanding.
  6. Group and Peer in structured group settings for collaboration: Collaborative learning allows students to approach math problems from different perspectives. Working in groups promotes discussion, debate, and collective problem-solving, helping students grasp math concepts more deeply. Moreover, peers can often explain things in a way that resonates with fellow students, bridging gaps in understanding.

How will MTSS TIER 2 help improve math scores?

  1. Allow re-takes of assessments: By allowing students to retake assessments, they are given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and solidify their understanding. It recognizes that learning is a process, and mastery can come at different paces. Re-assessing after further study reinforces both the material and the student’s confidence, leading to improved performance.
  2. Accept late work: By accepting late work, educators acknowledge that every student’s personal and academic journey is unique. Some may need additional time to grasp complex mathematical concepts. Offering this flexibility ensures that students do not rush through assignments just to meet deadlines, but rather invest the time necessary to truly understand, leading to better long-term retention and mastery.
  3. Provide more time on assessments and assignments: Giving students extended time reduces anxiety and pressure, allowing them to think more critically and clearly. This is especially beneficial for complex math problems that require multi-step reasoning. Students are more likely to approach problems methodically and make fewer careless errors, leading to higher scores.
  4. Individualized tutoring by peers or teachers: One-on-one tutoring sessions cater to a student’s specific needs, allowing for targeted instruction and immediate feedback. Tutors can identify and address gaps in understanding, provide alternative explanations, and offer personalized strategies and tips. Peer tutors, having recently grasped the concepts themselves, might offer relatable approaches, while teachers can draw upon their expertise to clarify and reinforce complex topics.

How will MTSS TIER 3 help improve math scores?

  1. Personalized Learning Paths: Tailoring lessons specifically to the needs of at-risk students ensures that they aren’t left behind. By focusing on their unique challenges and building on their strengths, these students can make significant progress at their own pace.
  2. Continuous Monitoring: Regularly tracking the progress of at-risk students allows educators to make real-time adjustments to their learning paths. By identifying weak areas early on, intervention can occur immediately, preventing small gaps in understanding from becoming larger issues.
  3. Mentorship Relationship: A strong mentorship bond can be transformative for at-risk students. Having a mentor provides them with a consistent source of guidance, encouragement, and support. This relationship can boost their confidence, motivation, and sense of belonging in the academic environment.
  4. Emotional and Academic Support: At-risk students often face challenges both inside and outside the classroom. By providing both academic and emotional support, these students are equipped to handle the multifaceted challenges they encounter. Understanding their personal struggles allows mentors to provide more holistic guidance.
  5. Safe Environment for Queries: With dedicated mentorship, students have a safe space to ask questions, express their concerns, and clarify doubts. This open communication ensures that misconceptions are addressed promptly.
  6. Goal Setting and Accountability: Mentors can help at-risk students set realistic yet challenging goals. Regular check-ins ensure that students remain accountable, and these milestones can offer motivation and a clear direction for their efforts.

Student-Led Engaging Education Designed for Understanding is our mission.

I started my journey as a science teacher in 2011 at a Title I high school. In roles such as Induction Coach and co-department chair, I've been privileged to witness the challenges in classrooms as well as those encountered by school administrators. Throughout this journey, I led my department's Professional Learning Communities, participated in the district's Science Subject Councils, and engaged in numerous leadership trainings facilitated by a variety of consultants and Professional Development specialists. Yet, after over 100 hours of training, the gap in understanding between classroom teachers and school administrators only seemed to grow. Neither group seemed to possess the right technology, teaching methods, or resources to effect meaningful change. As a result, they often reverted to their old ways.

Together with Amy and Arthur, I co-founded Win Elements LLC. Our aim was to offer SLEEDU as a comprehensive technology solution that fosters the implementation of research-based teaching practices. However, instead of embracing our innovative solutions, we encountered resistance from teachers and school leaders holding on to outdated perspectives. Similarly, forward-thinking teachers like us often found themselves marginalized by a majority who clung to older methods. Regardless, we persevered. The effectiveness of our approach became particularly evident during distance learning, as our students consistently excelled. Today, we proudly serve over 2,000 students through SLEEDU, with that number increasing daily.  Teachers spent their money and time supporting SLEEDU and learning how to use SLEEDU. Last year, we have more than a 1 TRILLIONS hits from all the students.
