Taking attendance during live sessions for distance learning could be very time-consuming and inaccurate.
However, using the right tools and strategies, we share with other teachers how can they take attendance and record engagement easily, quickly and accurately.
Absent or Present
We have students login to the website and submit their own attendance during our live sessions. We remind them at the beginning of each class through the chat.
Students are submitting their own attendance as they wait for their peers to join the live session. It has become a daily norm and warm up activities for students in my classes. Furthermore, students are given a grade for submitting their attendance as part of their participation grade. It is not a grade for attendance, rather it is a grade for completing the activity.
Engaged, Partially Engaged, or Not Engaged
The determine students’ engagement, we have an adaptive and auto-graded for our daily activities. It could be an exit ticket, practices, or homework. It is automatically closed and graded students work. Initially, we assume all present students are engaged, so we submit “engaged’ on Q or similar information system.
Then, we can quickly and easily identify any students who have not attempted by looking at the online grade book. Then, we can change those students to partially engaged or not engaged.
