Costly Mistakes: Getting Trapped in “Free” Technologies

With so many different education technologies, teachers are overwhelmed by the many different features and functions of different technologies. More importantly, it is more overwhelming for students and parents when teachers introduce many different technologies in their lessons.

One costly mistake is training teachers to us many “FREE” technologies at the beginning to save money, and they are forced to buy site-licenses for many of the “Free” technologies later on.  According to Edweek Market Brief, “K-12 districts [are] wasting millions by not using purchased software.”

Most companies require schools to pay for site licenses at discounted volume prices. Likewise, schools opt for site-license prices for volume discounts.  Paying for a site-license of one technology is a small amount; however, the cost adds up quickly when schools have to pay for many different site-licenses. In addition, schools have to pay for substitutes and related expenses (e.g. extra-paid duties and valuable instructional time) to train teachers. At the same time, schools must not limit their teachers’ ability to explore and integrate new technologies.

Instead, they should have specific requirements for all teachers when teachers ask for technology. For example, a school should have a form with specific questions based on important criteria:

  • Frequency of usage:  At least 2 times per week
  • Does it require site-license for a few teachers?
  • How does a teacher use it to enhance students’ learning?
  • Is a teacher willing to invest their own time to learn and create new lessons?
  • Does it promote learning equity?
  • Does it applicable in different learning settings, such as distance, hybrid, or normal?
  • Does it save school money?
  • Does it promote teachers’ collaboration?
  • Does it promote data-driven instruction?

By having a teacher answer specific questions on how he/she integrates a particular technology, school leaders can easily identify self-motivated teachers to invest in and not having to invest in unnecessary site-license and training costs. Most importantly, each teacher needs to come up with their own answers, or the process would be meaningless.
